Kendra

Kendra made a promise to herself and to her kids that they would one day have a home of their own. Her teenage daughter even set a goal for her: “You’ve got until 40, Mom.” Today, at age 37, Kendra beat the clock.

After spending a year in the Houston Habitat homeownership program, Kendra officially got the keys to her new home. For this hard-working mother of two, it’s more than just checking a goal off a list; it’s about giving her children the safety, stability, and peace they have long needed.

Now,  her son Diyari has a backyard, and 16-year-old Aniya has space to study and plan for her future. And Kendra finally has the joy of watching her family settle into a place that’s truly theirs.

While Kendra’s father is no longer with her, she feels his presence deeply. His final wish to Kendra’s mother was that his daughter would be taken care of. Her mother beamed with pride on the day of her home dedication while Kendra wore a t-shirt with a picture of her father that read, “Guess what, Dad? I’m a homeowner. Welcome home!” It was a beautiful way to have both her parents at this important moment and show her dad she was taking care of herself and her kids.

Kendra is deeply honored to be a Houston Habitat homeowner. “To everyone at Habitat—volunteers, donors, staff—thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” she says. “Because of you, we are blessed with more than a house. We are home.”
